More than just a capoeira based alphabet and numbers book.

Presented in the format of a children's book, C is for Capoeira uses letters, words, numbers, exquisite artistry and intricate illustrations to help new capoeiristas:

∙ Become familiar with capoeira music and movements
∙ Learn to count in Portuguese, and
∙ Connect what they've learned to capoeira movements, symbols and traditions.

C is for Capoeira invites you, your friends and/or family members to connect to capoeira by inspiring you to become active, engaged, informed and knowledgeable capoeiristas.

"C is for Capoeira not only promotes the martial art, it promotes an appreciation for the cultures, philosophies, people and countries where capoeira originated."

— Guro Dan Inosanto, Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts

After 75 years of writing short stories, screenplays, radio scripts, novels, etc., etc., etc. -- and almost 50 years in the roda; I am blessed to be able to write a few words about “C is for Capoeira”. It might also be called a Coup. This is not simply a beautiful book, artistically, but an important book; that will bring more people into the heart of this wonderful martial art, the book righteously deserves all of the praise I can give it.The artwork is superb, the explanation of the movements are precise, coherent. For those of us who did not grow up speaking Capoeira-Portuguese, but learned the songs and instruments by practice, baby, practice, the book is a treasure house. For years, as we yearned for a “C is for Capoeira”, we felt an empty place where the spiritual side of Capoeira was located. “C is for Capoeira” fills that spiritual gap with what my Iyalosha Tanina Şangobumni called “Afrikanity”. Afrikanity flows from the pages of this gorgeous document. In my 85 years of life in this America, I can honestly say that I’ve lived long enough to see the work of a talented team who got it ALL right. Manal Aboelata-Henry and Dr. Randal Henry, authors. The artist, Keef Aura and the book designer, Marina Scott blended their unique gifts to create a gem of a book. No matter whether you are a Capoeirista or not, I think you will be feeling my joy each time you open the “C is for Capoeira”.

— Odie Hawkins, Author

About the Illustrator

KEEF AURA is a painter, poet and martial artist from Los Angeles.  The themes of his work are spiritual in nature, acknowledging the re-emergence of a sacred paradigm. He sees art as the original technology... and the word "artist" as being synonymous with shaman or healer.

Keef Aura has been a practitioner of the holistic art of capoeira for many years. Capoeira's ritual-creativity has had a major influence on his artistic and cosmological perspective. "There's been ecstatic moments in the roda when the boundaries between self and environment/other dissolved...all that remained was the relationship...the dance." Keef's collection of capoeira themed images is meant to be a visual aid for integrating metaphysical realities of the spirit into our everyday lives.
