Meet Dr. Randal Henry: An Author, Community Leader and Advocate for Health Policy and Research

Randal Henry is an esteemed member of his community, driven by his passion for research and health policy. He is a founding CEO of Community Intelligence, an Afrocentric research and health policy consulting firm, as well as the Executive Director of the Center for Healthy Neighborhoods, a non-profit organization that strives to enhance health and wellbeing in under-resourced communities.

Randal is also an accomplished author, penning works such as Born in South LA: 100+ Remarkable African Americans Who Were Born, Raised, Lived or Died in South Los Angeles, Go South LA: An Afrocentric City Guide to South Los Angeles, and Black Firsts in Los Angeles: Extraordinary Achievements by Afro-Angelenos Listed from A to Z. Through his writing, Randal sheds light on the rich Afrocentric culture and history of South Los Angeles, which is often overlooked in mainstream media. His books not only provide historical context but also showcase the resilience and strength of the Black community.

Raised in South LA, Randal earned his doctorate and master's degree in Public Health from the University of California Los Angeles, and his BA in Political Science from Cal Poly Pomona. He currently lives in the Crenshaw District with his wife, Manal, and their two children.

Randal’s work continues to draw attention to the importance of preserving and celebrating Afrocentric culture in the community. By sharing his expertise and experiences, he aims to inspire and educate others, offering valuable insights on the culture and history of South Los Angeles through his speaking engagements.

In this talk, Dr. Henry guides the audience on a virtual tour of South Los Angeles, highlighting the many ways in which African American culture has enriched the community over the years. Dr. Henry delves into the history of the area, pointing out landmarks and places of significance, and sharing stories of the people who have helped shape its identity.

Breaking Barriers: The Inspiring Legacy of Black Firsts in Los Angeles

In this talk, Dr. Henry takes the audience on a journey through some of the most groundbreaking achievements by Afro-Angelenos. From the first African American mayor of Los Angeles to the first Black-owned record company, Dr. Henry highlights the many ways in which African Americans have made history in the city of Los Angeles, and explores the ongoing struggle for equity and representation in all areas of life.
